In its formative stages, the project eventually known as Clueless went from potential Fox TV show to potential Fox feature film, and then-for a short but frustrating period before landing at Paramount-almost didn’t happen at all. Given Heckerling’s established skill and success with coming-of-age comedy, it seems as if No Worries should have easily come together. At that point, the project was called No Worries, one of several names used ( I Was a Teenage Teenager was another) before Clueless got its official title. Media buzz about the breakout potential of Alicia Silverstone-then best known for her appearances in a trio of Aerosmith videos and the thriller The Crush-also started to build well before the film’s release. The comedy benefited from some serious promotional juice courtesy of MTV, which, like Paramount, was part of the Viacom family and pitched the film heavily to its Real World-addicted Gen X and Y audience. It’s not as if Clueless had been flying entirely below the public’s radar. Sherry Lansing, then the head of the studio, liked it so much that after screening it she didn’t have a single story note. But I can’t get over the fact that the movie is basically about it being okay to fall in love with your brother.In mid-July of 1995-when American culture was fixated on such matters as O. I know this movie is an iconic depiction of 90’s culture, and it supercharged the careers of its stars. But then of course there’s still a weird statutory issue since Cher is only 16 in the movie! Josh could’ve easily been just some older guy who works for Cher’s dad that has known her since she was little and who she just now realizes she has feelings for. By the end of the movie (spoilers?) Cher realizes she’s in love with Josh, and they end up kissing! The crazy part is that the step-family subplot is completely unnecessary.
They still see each other frequently because Josh works for Cher’s dad, and they have a very sibling-like relationship. I think it is said that Cher was around 10 or 11 when the parents meet and it is mentioned that the marriage didn’t last long, but at some point, presumably, Cher and Josh were raised together as step-siblings. We decided to watch it, and… OMG, how did I not know about the creepy incestuous undertones?! Allow me to jog your memory: in the movie, Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Josh (Paul Rudd) were at some point related when her dad and his mom were married. My wife and I saw that Clueless was on Netflix, and neither of us had ever seen it.
